Six Ways to Diversify Your Ice Cream Business

You know that selling ice creams can be largely dependent on the weather.  Bad weather sees your profits plummet.  Sometimes, luck plays a part and a street vendor covers an area where ice creams are bought whatever the weather. However, for many it is totally or mainly a seasonal job where you hope to gain sufficient income to see you through the winter months.  More and more often though you want opportunities to diversify to maximise your investment in your van and earn a decent income.

Here, we take a look a few ways to diversify that might help prolong the season when required and increase your earning capacity.

  1. Lunch time sandwiches

If you are already covering out of the way industrial areas to sell ice creams, where there is not a catering van or trailer, there is the option to make sandwiches to sell.

Leaflet the units with a date you are due to start and see what interest there is to gauge what you are likely to need.

  1. Home Freezer Options

Consider selling blocks of vanilla ice cream, tubs of ice cream, and ice cream deserts such as arctic roll and other frozen desserts for customers to pop in their home freezer for use at their convenience.

  1. Tea, Coffee and Hot Chocolate

Look into making space in the van for a hot water machine to sell hot beverages.

  1. Bacon and Burgers

Is it feasible to put a portable grill in over a freezer for winter use?  If so you could add bacon rolls and burgers to your repertoire.

  1. Special Holidays

Offer a pre-order facility for special ice cream tubs at Christmas, Easter and other holidays.  This could be extended to include brandy butter and fresh cream at Christmas and hot cross buns in the run up to Easter.

  1. Ice

Grow your range to include bags of ice.  Again this is something that people could pre-order when they are having a home party.

That’s just six ways to keep going through the winter.  If not doing these exactly, hopefully they have helped you to think of ways that could help in your own individual circumstances.
